As technology becomes faster, smarter, and more reliable, human involvement with this great technology will be stronger. With this great involvement in technology, many start to question whether or not humans are becoming too dependent on this new technology. According to Computerworld, it is estimated that by 2025 one and three jobs will be taken over by software and computers. Some make take this statistic as a great thing for society, while others may view this as a threat to society.
In 1993, Peter G. Neumann wrote an article titled “Technology, Laws, and Society”, in which he said that, “Debate continues over whether the emerging computer and communication technologies introduce intrinsic differences with respect to how our civilization must respond, or whether the advances are merely incremental steps from what has preceded them”(Neumann 138). Since the start of the “technology age”, many feel as though one-day technology will indeed take over the world, while others may feel as though technology will help advance society. One may see that major companies, in all industries, using technology to help run their business and make them more successful. Even 20 years ago, Neumann makes the point that there are some people in the world who have different views about technology influencing our society.
Although the topic is interesting to think and talk about, society and it’s people must come back to reality and try to solve this problem. Almost everything around us has now been influenced by technology, and now we as society must choose whether to accept this style of life or reject this kind of style. Both sides of the topic make great points on the issue, but ultimately there has to be decision made on whether technology is hurting or helping our society.
