HOW IS THE WORLD IMPACTED BY TECHNOLOGY?
With technology spreading from a national phenomenon to global phenomenon it is hard to ignore technology’s impact on the world. The idea of technology helping or hurting the has been a debate that seems nearly impossible to solve, However, two researchers Walter Armburst and Külliki Korts, take on the perspective of technology’s impact on the world, giving us a heated debate between the two. Armburst suggests that, “Based on invitations to conferences and requests to contribute to publications over the last 20 years, I would say that the driving force behind this engagement is growing interest in what we call ‘new media’” (Armbrust 155). While Korts feels as though, “The theory of risk society considers the technological developments of the last century to have shaken the very foundation of modern or industrial society, and produced a new type of risk environment, [characterized] by an ever-present possibility for a global catastrophe” (Korts 242). Both researchers bring up an interesting debate about the effects of technology on the earth, where Armburst feels as though technology, or ‘new media’, is beneficial because people are attracted by technology, thus making presentations or meetings more interesting to the listener or consumer. However, Korts feels as though technology is the only thing keeping people interested about certain issues, thus diminishing the intelligence of society.
Within the article, and debate between the two researchers, both point to a different perspective of technology within the work environment. Both question technology’s impact on the communication between bosses and employees, and how much of the work being done is being interrupted by the lack of communication. Armburst and Korts both bring up excellence points that make many readers ponder about technology around the world. So, can one actually say technology is benefitting or hurting the world? Not yet. Society is still within the technology age and as it continues to grow one will be able to narrow down this question.
